Playback configuration

This is the configuration I used, with a Windows XP computer, to make audio tapes for the Rushmoor Odd Fellows MVC. In the example below, the Second Bass part (on MIDI channel 4) is directed to an external MIDI keyboard, while all other channels go to the internal sound card. The MIDI keyboard is connected to the PC's USB port via a Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI interface.

The software that makes this possible is MIDIOX, which is a multi-purpose tool. It can perform filtering and mapping of MIDI data streams. It displays incoming MIDI streams, and passes the data to a MIDI output driver or the MIDI Mapper. It is a very versatile tool and I use but a fraction of its capability. It is freeware (when used personally by individuals), although a donation to defray expenses is invited.

MIDI YOKE is also required (from the same source). This is a MIDI Patch Cable driver. MIDI YOKE is used to connect any Windows MIDI Application output to any other Application's input. Two such connections appear in the configuration shown here.

The diagram below illustrates the configuration that I use, while the screen snapshots show the settings of the various connections in MIDIOX that implement this configuration.

It works for me, although I had to buy a separate sound card: the built-in sound facility suffers a small delay and hence does not synchronise with the external MIDI keyboard. The sound card, however, is correctly synchronised.
